Our story begins with a question that still drives us today: how can we make the diving experience better?
The answer emerged through exploration. In the caves of North Florida and on expeditions across Mexico, into the Arctic Circle, over the Great Lakes, and across some of the most remote regions on planet Earth. Exploration dives revealed the limits of existing equipment and practices. Going farther required more than individual skill. Exploration called for a coordinated team, a consistent approach, and equipment designed to work as part of a complete system.
These experiences helped to shape the thinking behind Halcyon: identify the challenge, question what is familiar, and invent meaningful improvements for the divers who depended on them.

Built from experience
During the early years, exploration was a process of trial, error, and refinement. Every dive revealed new lessons about equipment configuration, but also about how divers could work more effectively together.
Expeditions to Turkey in 1995 and 1996 brought those lessons into sharper focus. Collaboration with universities and governments created opportunities to support scientific research through globally coordinated expeditions. A broader vision began to emerge: Purpose-built equipment, shared practices, and connected communities, working together to give divers the tools to undertake purposeful exploration.
Much like a three-legged stool, along with Extreme Exposure and Global Underwater Explorers, Halcyon’s rigorously tested equipment formed one essential part of a broader approach to diving.

Innovation with a purpose
As exploration reached greater depths, distances and durations, the demands on divers and their equipment grew.
The development of Halcyon’s semi-closed rebreather systems, including the RB80, is an important part of that history. The goal was to help divers undertake meaningful work underwater—from exploring new passages and mapping cave systems, to discovering new wrecks, and supporting scientific projects. That history reflects a principle central to Halcyon today—innovation should deliver improvement to the diving experience.
Equipment is only part of the story. Equally important are the people who test the ideas, share their knowledge, and carry their experience from one expedition to the next. Progress develops through the connection between people, practice, and technology.
